FAQ
Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, increases the size of the breasts or restores breast volume using breast implants.
No, but there are two different kinds of implants: silicone and saline.
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel and are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 22 or older. The gel feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel will not collapse. Dr. Rosing typically uses silicone gel implants made by Allergan. If you choose silicone implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly. An ultrasound or MRI screening can assess the condition of breast implants.
Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water and are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 18 or older. Should the implant shell leak, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, firmness and feel.
You may want breast augmentation if:
- You are doing it for yourself, not someone else
- Your breasts are fully developed
- You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
- You are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or with aging
- You are unhappy with the upper part of your breast appearing “empty”
- Your breasts are asymmetrical
- One or both breasts failed to develop normally or have an elongated shape
Breast augmentation does not correct severely sagging breasts. If you want your breasts to look fuller and lifted, a breast lift may be required in addition to breast augmentation.
Breast augmentation cannot reverse sun damage to the skin or remove all wrinkles on the chest.
During your consultation, Dr. Rosing will start by asking about your goals for the procedure and what specifically you would like to change about your appearance and why. Dr. Rosing will examine your breasts and discuss the best treatment options to achieve your desired results. He will share before and after photographs of his work and set realistic expectations. He will also complete a full medical history, evaluate your current health, and make note of any prescriptions or supplements you take and whether you smoke. He will then review all of the possible risks of the surgery and a complete breakdown of the cost.
Breast augmentation surgery is usually done under general anesthesia.
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure.
To insert the breast implant, Dr. Rosing will make one of three possible incisions:
- Inframammary, in the crease under your breast
- Axillary, under your arm
- Periareolar, around your nipple
After making an incision, Dr. Rosing will separate the breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue of your chest. He will then insert the implant into this pocket, either behind or in front of the pectoral muscle, and center it behind your nipple. Dr. Rosing will close the incision with stitches.
Breast augmentation surgery generally takes 1-2 hours.
Your breasts will continue to age after surgery, and weight gain or weight loss might change the appearance of your breasts. The average lifespan of a breast implant is 10 years, and implant rupture is a possibility.
After surgery, you will be taken into a recovery area to be closely monitored. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings and an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. Before leaving, you will be given specific instructions that may include how to care for your breasts following surgery, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection, and when to follow-up with Dr. Rosing.
You will likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. Bruising is possible, as well. You may be instructed to wear a support bra around the clock for the first week or two. It will be important to cleanse the incision sites and apply ointment as directed. Most patients can expect to return to normal activities two weeks after breast augmentation. Your breasts will be sensitive to physical contact or jarring movements for xxxtime. Scars will eventually fade but not completely disappear.
It is important to avoid any form of nicotine for at least 3-4 weeks before and after surgery. Nicotine, in any form, can increase the risk for skin and tissue death and will delay your face’s healing process and worsen scarring. You must also avoid vigorous activity or exercise for two weeks.
Problems that may be caused by breast augmentation include:
- Scar tissue that distorts the shape of the breast implant (capsular contracture)
- Breast pain
- Infection
- Changes in nipple and breast sensation
- Implant leakage or rupture
Correcting these complications might require more surgery, either to remove or replace the implants. Complications are rare and are often easily solved by Dr. Rosing if you notify us. Call us if you experience any of the following: a temperature of 101 or higher, increased local redness or warmth, chest pain, shortness of breath, legs swelling, calf pain, or if you have any other concerns.
Unless it's medically necessary, such as after a mastectomy, breast augmentation is not covered by insurance. It is important to find out the total costs of the procedure, which includes Dr. Rosing’s fees along with fees for the operating facility, anesthesia, medicines, follow-up care, office visits, and other services. Make sure you ask your health insurance company about its policies and whether having a breast augmentation will affect your coverage in any way. Some insurance companies may raise your premiums after you get cosmetic surgery, and, in some instances, getting a breast augmentation affects future coverage. If your plan won’t cover treatment for any complications from cosmetic surgery, you may want to consider getting a supplemental insurance policy.
