FAQ
One of the safest and most popular cosmetic procedures, liposuction surgery sculpts the body, eliminating unwanted pockets of exercise- and diet-resistant fat from the buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts (including male breasts), back, arms and neck.
Yes, there are a variety of techniques that facilitate liposuction, but Dr. Rosing exclusively uses the SAFELipo technique in all cases. He uses power-assisted liposuction (PAL) only and does not use any heat generating liposuction devices or laser-assisted liposuction (LAL).
You may want liposuction if:
- You have a minimal amount of excess skin
- You have good skin elasticity
- You have localized deposits of fat disproportionate to the rest of your body
- You are physically fit and no more than twenty pounds overweight
- Your weight is stable
- You would like more definition or a sleeker contour in certain areas of your body
Liposuction does not remove cellulite or stretch marks and cannot tighten loose skin.
During your consultation, Dr. Rosing will start by asking about your goals for the procedure and what specifically you would like to change about your appearance and why. Dr. Rosing will examine you and discuss your best treatment options to achieve your desired results. In doing so, he may suggest additional changes or an alternative procedure if that better suits your goals. He will share before and after photographs of his work and set realistic expectations. He will also complete a full medical history, evaluate your current health, and make note of any prescriptions or supplements you take and whether you smoke. He will then review all of the possible risks of the surgery and a complete breakdown of the cost.
Many liposuction procedures require only local anesthesia. Intravenous sedation can be used to help you relax.
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure.
After diagramming the areas to be treated, Dr. Rosing will make small incisions where needed. He will then insert a cannula through each incision to remove excess fat.
The SAFELipo technique is a three step process:
- Separation: loosens, emulsifies and separates out unwanted fat cells without generating heat, so essential blood vessels, skin and other tissues remain unharmed.
- Aspiration: fat cells are gently removed through suction, without damaging supporting structures such as nerves, blood vessels, and skin.
- Fat Equalization: the remaining thin fat layer is smoothed, leaving behind a uniform layer of local fat grafts that prevents contour deformities from forming.
Depending on the extent of fat removal, the procedure may last up to several hours.
Expect some pain, fluid drainage, swelling, and bruising after the procedure. Dr. Rosing may prescribe medication to help control pain and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. You will have to wear tight compression garments to help reduce swelling for a few weeks.
Swelling and bruising typically subside within a few weeks to reveal a new, leaner appearance. Scars from the incisions will fade over time but never completely disappear.
It is important to avoid any form of nicotine for, at minimum, two weeks before and after surgery. Nicotine, in any form, can increase the risk for skin and tissue death and will delay your healing process and worsen scarring. You must also avoid vigorous activity or exercise for at least 4 weeks.
Problems that may be caused by liposuction include:
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Fluid accumulation
- Contour irregularities
- Permanent numbness
- Internal puncture
- Fat embolism
- Kidney and heart problems
- Lidocaine toxicity (rare)
Complications are rare and are often easily solved by Dr. Rosing if you notify us. Call us if you experience any of the following: a temperature of 101 or higher, increased local redness or warmth, chest pain, shortness of breath, legs swelling, calf pain, or if you have any other concerns.
No. Insurance companies do not cover the costs of liposuction. It is important to find out the total costs of the procedure, which includes Dr. Rosing’s fees along with fees for the operating facility, anesthesia, medicines, follow-up care, office visits, and other services. Make sure you ask your health insurance company about its policies and whether having liposuction will affect your coverage in any way. Some insurance companies may raise your premiums after you get cosmetic surgery, and, in some instances, getting liposuction affects future coverage. If your plan won’t cover treatment for any complications from cosmetic surgery, you may want to consider getting a supplemental insurance policy.
